How to compress a PDF and reduce its file size
Many government, university and job portals reject files above a size limit such as 200 KB or 1 MB. Compressing your PDF shrinks the images inside it, which is where most of the size comes from, so the file becomes easy to upload or email.
Start with the lowest level of compression that meets the limit. Scanned documents shrink the most; text-only PDFs are already small. If you need a specific target such as 100 KB or 200 KB, use the PDF Size Compressor.

Questions
Why don’t some PDFs get smaller?
This tool shrinks the photos inside. A text-only or already compressed PDF barely changes, and in that case we don’t give you a new file.
I need it under 1 MB for a portal.
Use “PDF size target”, which shrinks the file to the size you choose.
Can I compress a digitally signed PDF?
You can, but any change invalidates the digital signature. Send signed documents as they are.
Why is my PDF still large after compressing?
PDFs made of high-resolution scans hold a lot of image data. Try a stronger setting, or split the file and compress each part.
Is the compressed PDF still readable?
Yes, at normal settings. Very strong compression can make small print softer, so zoom in and check before you submit.
